BANDMASTERS OF THE NORTHWEST Unearth, Deciphered, and Compiled By John C. McManus THE OLD-TIMERS The Northwest Bandmasters Association, commonly called “The Old-Timers,” was organized in 1953 for the express purpose of honoring those music educators who had earned the respect and admiration of their colleagues for their unique and successful contributions to the music education of the youth of the Northwest. Current members are from Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Each year, one or more educators are chosen by the past honorees to receive the award and join the “Old-Timers.” The first four people honored in 1953 were John Stehn, Andy Loney, Wally Hannah, and Captain Arthur Haynes. By design, this unique organization ran for many years without officers or dues, although several dedicated persons, among them Byron Hoyt, John Stehn, Norm Street, and Verne Wilson, organized the yearly award ceremony and took charge of other necessary details during the early years. No minutes were taken and no reports made. Finally, sometime during the first 40 years, one officer, a president, was chosen to hold things together. By 1993, despite a noticeable resistance to bureaucracy, a few minor adjustments to the relaxed method of operation were found to be necessary. The group now sports a set of by-laws and added a president-elect and an advisory board beginning in 1994. A picnic is held in the summer to nominate a candidate, or candidates, for the yearly award; and a banquet is held in the fall for the presentation. Both get-togethers produce a bit of music and an ample supply of stories told on one another, band jokes, and historic anecdotes of all kinds. This levity balances the serious intent and major goal of the organization and of the banquet which is to honor distinguished music educators, and to remember and pay tribute to the many Old Timers (84 as of 2008) who have passed away. ROBERT DUVALL MUSIC LENDING LIBRARY Robert Duvall was a long time conductor of the Bellevue Washington Community Band and public school music instructor. With his involvement in music over the years, he acquired a large collection of band music. On his passing, it was his wish to have his band library made available to Community Bands as a lending library. His wish is soon to come about through the work of Glenn Tadina and several members from the Salem Concert Band and Portland Metro Band who have diligently worked on the cataloguing project. The project was left in the hands of Glenn Tadina as requested by Robert Duvall's daughter, Amy. The Duvall Music Lending Library is about 50% catalogued. The library hosts 2,000 + titles of concert selections and marches which fills eleven four drawer file cabinets and several cardboard boxes. Much of the library is Out of Print material. If you would like to help with the cataloguing, let us know and we will contact you with information as to how you can get involved. Some of the process of administering the library is still being developed by Amy and Glenn. Funds are currently short for the purchase some needed supplies to complete the project. Contact Glenn or Amy if you are inclined to make a donation. We will also accept band selections you may have and like to add them to the Duvall library. Although we are not quite set to put the lending library into full swing, let us know if you are looking for a special title. We will do our best to try and locate your request.
